The boxes around the tank are filled with dynamite. These were invented by the Soviets as a tank defense system: they would explode any projectile that reached the tank before it pierced the armor. At first, the program was not implemented. The Soviets only started using it after a Soviet Jew immigrated to Israel and shared the secret project with the Israeli Defense Army.
